Domestic violence remains a critical issue in New Jersey, with the state ranking among the top ten for highest rates of intimate partner homicides nationwide. In 2021, there were over 70,000 reported domestic violence incidents, a 15% increase from the previous year. Tragically, many victims face significant barriers to accessing the support and resources they need to escape abusive situations.

Residents in New Jersey's urban centers, such as Newark, Trenton, and Camden, are disproportionately impacted by domestic violence. These cities have high poverty rates, with over 25% of the population living below the federal poverty line. Victims in these communities often lack access to reliable transportation, childcare, and affordable housing - all of which are essential for safely departing an abusive home. Language barriers and cultural stigma around seeking help can also deter many immigrant and minority populations from reporting domestic violence incidents.

This grant program aims to address these critical gaps by providing funding to strengthen crisis intervention services for domestic violence victims across New Jersey. By partnering with local shelters, legal aid organizations, and social service providers, we can ensure victims have access to immediate safety planning, emergency housing, counseling, and legal assistance.
