Mental Health Training for School Staff in New Jersey
New Jersey's public schools have long grappled with the growing mental health needs of their student populations. In the state, nearly 1 in 5 children aged 3-17 experience a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder. However, many schools lack the resources and training to effectively identify and support these students. This funding opportunity aims to address this critical gap by providing mental health training for educators across the state.
Research shows that school staff play a pivotal role in recognizing the signs of mental health issues and connecting students to appropriate support services. Yet, in New Jersey, only 53% of school districts currently offer mental health training for teachers and other personnel. This leaves a significant portion of the student body without access to educators equipped to address their social-emotional needs.
The mental health training program funded by this grant will empower school staff to identify students in distress, de-escalate crisis situations, and refer them to counseling or other professional help.
