Target outcomes center on three measurable products: a peer-reviewed monograph on New Jersey's role in early industrial chocolate refining, a set of K-12 curriculum modules aligned with state social-studies standards, and a public database of trade manifests from the Port of Newark. These deliverables directly address gaps in documentation of the state's contribution to national chocolate supply chains between 1880 and 1930.

The outcomes matter because New Jersey's population density places 9 million residents within 30 miles of existing archives, yet current scholarship on regional food history remains concentrated in New York and Pennsylvania collections. Without dedicated extraction of New Jersey-specific ledgers, the state's port-driven cocoa imports and related labor patterns stay invisible in national narratives.

Implementation requires coordination between Rutgers University faculty, the New Jersey Historical Commission, and three county records offices. Project staff will digitize 1,200 pages of customs documents and cross-reference them with employment rolls from the former Maillard plant in Hoboken. Quarterly review meetings will enforce adherence to state open-records statutes and data-security rules for sensitive commercial files.
