Coastal counties such as Monmouth and Ocean face additional seasonal staffing volatility tied to tourism employment cycles. Pharmaceutical and finance sectors draw clinical nutrition graduates away from school districts, leaving rural Warren and Sussex counties with unfilled positions for multiple academic years.
Transportation networks further restrict fresh-food distribution. The Port of Newark handles high volumes of imported produce, but last-mile delivery to inland districts in Hunterdon and Somerset requires refrigerated vehicles that 64 percent of school food authorities lack. Broadband gaps in southern counties limit participation in state-mandated nutrition tracking platforms that rely on real-time inventory uploads.
Readiness for foundation support therefore requires documented kitchen-equipment inventories, current staffing ratios by county, and a three-year capital plan aligned with New Jersey Department of Agriculture procurement rules. Unlike applications from neighboring states, New Jersey submissions must quantify the interaction between high-density suburban corridors and climate-driven supply disruptions at the Port of Newark. Organizations must also demonstrate compliance with the foundation’s anti-discrimination policy and maintain 501(c)(3) status with a U.S. office.
