According to a 2019 report from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, over 30% of BIPOC individuals in the state live in economically distressed areas, which contributes significantly to barriers in accessing training and technology essential for documentary work.
The challenge is particularly acute in urban centers like Newark and Jersey City, where underfunded schools and community organizations often lack the necessary resources to provide adequate training in historical editing. These barriers can hinder the ability of BIPOC individuals to participate fully in preserving and presenting histories that reflect their communities’ experiences. Consequently, the rich narratives of these populations remain underrepresented in New Jersey’s historical records, leading to a skewed understanding of the state's heritage.
The funding provided through this grant aims to bridge gaps in access to editing resources for BIPOC individuals in New Jersey.
